After a hectic week of reviewing all of the amazing PUSH N900 MOD IN THE USA submissions, PUSH N900 had a total of three teams of finalists that will all receive funding, assistance and N900 devices for their hacks. Now the fun part has really started, they’re actually bringing their designs to life and compete for up to $10,000 in prizes.

Nokia invites US tweekers and modders to submit their ideas for morphing the Nokia N900 into something entirely new. Whether it’s turning the Nokia N900 into a TV remote control or the brain of a fully functioning robot, the only limit is the contestants’ imagination.

The Nokia N900, which became available in the US this past November, is a powerful mobile computer that uses the open source, Linux-based Maemo Software to deliver a PC-like experience on a handset-sized device.

The top three ideas will be chosen from the ideas submitted by a panel of judges, after which the finalist teams will be provided with a Nokia N900 and so... .. .

Take The RedPill To Unlock Advance Features & Install DEB Files On Nokia N900

Friday, 12 March 2010 15:09

redpill_tmIf you are a big fan of the Matrix movie I'm betting you have already heard the pop culture term ‘redpill’. The movie relies on the premise that an artificial reality that is advanced enough will be indistinguishable from reality and that no test exists that can conclusively prove that reality is not a simulation.

Borrowing from the movie, the terms blue pill and red pill have become a popular metaphor for the choice between the blissful ignorance of illusion (blue) and embracing the sometimes painful, sometimes pleasant, truth of reality (red).

Well, in virtual Maemo’s world it is pretty much the same, Application manager normally works in a Blue Pill mode that includes many safety locks in place to reduce the risk of the user accid... .. .

What some of you may or may not already know is that Nokia N900 comes with only one enabled Application catalogue.

It’s default Nokia catalogue which is still not completely cooked and unfortunately doesn't contain as many applications and games as you would expect so I’m pretty sure you’ll need an alternative source of applications and games!

The easiest way would be enabling the pre-configured Maemo Extras repository which is included in the App manager but disabled by default. Enabling is quite simple, just run App mana... .. .

Freaker's Special: Mod Your N900 Boot Animation!!

Friday, 12 March 2010 15:09

nokia_connecting_tmOne of the best thing about being a mobile Freak is modding the skin off of your mobile to give it your own personal touch. My love for Symbian OS is mainly rooted in being able to really personalize my device.

I've always had custom boot animations on my S60 devices, and wondered how much freedom we could expect from the N900. The guys at "The .Org", the official developer home for Maemo developers, have an answer already, and its amazingly simple.

Maemo.org forum member claesbas knew about the customizability of the Maemo 5 OS, and used his excellent animation skills to make a gorgeous custom boot animation, and submitted it to the community to use. (Isn't the open source philosophy great?) Fellow member VDVsx chann.. .. .

Last weekend at the onedotzero hack and mod workshop on London's South Bank, Nokia has finally took the wraps off its super-secret PUSH N900 project, with hopes to keep the excitement around its first Linux based smartphone alive by encouraging its developer base to use it in the most creative way possible.

The main intention of this project is to give designers, hackers, modders, creatives and artists the chance to get their hands on, and heads inside, the new Nokia N900 & the Maemo 5 platform; the most ingenuous and powerful combination of software and hardware that they have ever created!

To enter competition you’ll need to tell them how you would hack and mod the Nokia N900 & Mae... .. .

Enabel Root Access And Take Full Control Over File System

Friday, 12 March 2010 15:09

gainroot_tmIf you need to tweak, delete or overwrite a system file in Nokia’s Symbian powered devices, you’ll quickly notice that you cannot change or even browse files and applications on the system partition of the phone. For instance if you want to overcome a security measures to install unsigned simple freeware application or game you’ll need to hack your phone or use Symbian’s rather annoying signing service.

This obnoxious concept was introduced by Nokia few years ago with its first S60 3rd edition phone (N80) and it is based on the idea that nobody gets access to these data caged directories which indeed improves the security but at the same time it makes these devices modding unfrien... .. .
