hackingWhat some of you may or may not already know is that Nokia N900 comes with only one enabled Application catalogue. It’s default Nokia catalogue which is still not completely cooked and unfortunately doesn't contain as many applications and games as you would expect so I’m pretty sure you’ll need an alternative source of applications and games!

The easiest way would be enabling the pre-configured Maemo Extras repository which is included in the App manager but disabled by default. Enabling is quite simple, just run App manager click on Application catalogues, scroll down and tap on the Maemo Extras tab, uncheck Disabled option, finally tap on save and refers the App manager to get an extra content.

Beside the Maemo Extras catalogue there is an Extras-Testing and Extras-devel repositories which includes software in an early stage of development that requires an intensive testing methodology, encompassing functional and performance optimization processes.

You should be careful because these software in not fully backed and may drain your battery or even damage your device, so please enable these catalogues and test applications from them only if you really know what you are doing, else better wait until they will be appear in Extras section of Application Manager.

PLEASE be aware that software hosted in extras-testing and extras-devel catalogues is not ready for and average phone users and is aimed to used only for testing purposes so please don’t post complaints but be ready to file proper bug reports. These applications needs to be tested primarily for functionality, performance parameters, interfacing with the existing application infrastructure so you can expect problems such as crashes, battery drain, poor system performance, full disk space and even more, SERIOUSLY!

Nokia N900 also has the basic User data preservation but Backing up your data is highly recommended because in case of trouble you might even need to re-flash your device which will result with loosing the settings and all of the installed applications and games.

So if you're brave enough to risk it I would suggest to enable extras-testing repositories which will give you an access to extras-testing repository hosts community applications and related packages that are waiting to be evaluated and promoted to Maemo 5 Extras. The packages hosted here are promoted from extras-devel and have gone through an automated quality check. Now they need real humans assessing that they are indeed ready to be released.

Users willing to give a hand testing and evaluating community applications must start activating the extras-testing repository in the Application Manager of their Maemo 5 compatible device.

  • Application manager --> Application catalogs --> New
  • Catalog name: maemo.org extras-testing
  • Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing
  • Distribution: fremantle
  • Components: free non-free
Or in case you are viewing this on your N900, you can simply click on the this link to automatically configure the extras-testing catalogue.

Last but not the least is the part about extras-devel catalogue which is aimed ONLY for real FREAKS and so called POWER users. Extras-devel is the place where developers upload the newest version of their software in an early stage of development. From there the packages go Extras-testing and finally Extras through an automatic and human Quality Assurance process.
This is a repository for developers and regular contributors of specific software projects. If you want to play with extras-devel software you need to be prepared to feel some pain sooner or later so be sure you have a valid backup before installation something from this catalogue.

In order to activate extras-devel in the Application manager you need to follow the same instructions used to enable the extras-testing repository, only using "extras-devel" instead. The instructions are not made more simple just on purpose. :)

  • Application manager --> Application catalogs --> New
  • Catalog name: Maemo Extras-devel
  • Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
  • Distribution: fremantle
  • Components: free non-free
In case you are viewing this on your N900, you can simply click on the this link to automatically configure the extras-testing catalogue.

So once again, you must be aware that software from these catalogue is provided AS IS with NO SUPPORT, be careful and use this soft at your own risk, Maemo Freak team and this site can’t take any responsibility if you damage your phone!
