quake III Nokia n900We see games on mobiles everyday, but usually they're nothing close to their PC and console counterparts. But evidently, the N900 is no ordinary mobile device.

YouTube poster twaelti has given us a peek at the N900's graphical capabilities as well as the agility of the Maemo 5 OS. Showing the N900 running Quake III, the video is unlike anything we've ever seen on a mobile. I know we've seen ports of Quake and Doom on Symbian and Windows Mobile devices, but nothing as smooth and complete as this.

In fact, I see no difference in performance between the original version and this mobile port. Evidently, the TI OMAP 3430 processor based ARM Cortex-A8 platform is up for the job in regards to graphical heavy lifting.

This build of Quake III is a developer version that got distributed during the just wrapped Maemo Summit 2009 in Amsterdam.

It adds support for the accelerometer, so motion control is easy as pie. Also implemented is the touchscreen to aim weapons, and the proximity sensor, which is used to blow opponents to bits. According to twaelti, this build is a work in progress, so we may see one of the best mobile games ever in the near future.

Paired with the N900's beautiful TV-out, this video brings up a pretty appropriate question. In this day and age, do we even need console gaming systems anymore?! When comparing the features of the hottest consoles and the newest Maemo device, I have to say I'd take an N900 over a PS3, XBox, or Wii anyday. How about you?
